SOS adult acne: how do i save my skin?

Unfortunately, it is not always a bad teenage memory. Indeed, for some adults, acne desperately remains and continues to cover their face, back, décolleté. Acne affects just over a quarter of the adult population, mostly women. Closely linked to hormonal changes and stress, all women can get acne, without having oily skin.

Teenage acne and adult acne: what is the difference?

Teenage acne is often linked to a massive production of sebum on an oily skin; it affects the entire face (in particular, the face T-zone). Adult acne appears on dry or mixed skin and is often located on the chin and maxillary area i.e., the whole lower face. We are talking of hormonal acne.

Help, an acne breakout!

At the origin of acne, the sebaceous glands, responsible for the production of sebum, a greasy film that is protecting the skin from external aggressions. For some people, sebaceous glands are too active: they produce an excess of sebum that clog the pores of the skin. Then, bacteria get into it and cause an accumulation of sebum and the appearance of blackheads and red pimples.

Thanks Dad, thanks Mom! According to our gene pool, symptoms may be different: that’s why some people have more acne than others.

The appearance of a huge pimple is also common at the time of menstruation! Shortly before the periods, ovaries produce progesterone, which stimulates the sebaceous glands activity, a fertile ground for imperfections.

And when your skin is ageing, the slowing down of cell renewal boosts the accumulation of sebum and thus causes inflammation and … pimples!

But did you also know that our body has exit doors (emunctories: intestines, kidneys, skin and lungs) that are used to evacuate its waste matter? When intestines and/or kidneys are saturated, the body uses the skin as a way out. Therefore acne appears when our main eliminating system is saturated. Often, due to your diet but also to a lifestyle that prevents your organism from working well (lack of sleep, stress), you bring too many toxins to your body.

Stress generates pimples!

In case of stress, many nerve cells located near the sebaceous glands increase the production of sebum. As acne is also a source of stress, it quickly becomes a vicious circle!  So, here are some anti-stress ideas. Easy to implement, they can be a good help and improve your skin balance. Relaxation, meditation, sophrology and yoga sometimes do wonders. Sometimes even a simple bath, a walk, a massage or an hour reading are enough to relieve the tension.

Favour quality sleep to boost elimination, which is very active during this phase. Try to work out regularly. Find a lifestyle that allows you to relax, you will reduce your skin problem and gain a great deal of well-being.

Which anti-acne diet?

Diet plays a major role: Sugar, gluten and dairy products are among the primary causes of skin inflammation! On the good side, a well balanced diet and good hydration will help limit adult acne. So, think about the following steps to take:

  • Reduce or stop eating dairy products
  • Reduce refined sugars
  • Reduce to a minimum processed products (refined cereals, industrial products)
  • Increase the part of fruits and vegetables (crunching, juice, smoothie)
  • Add some spirulina and/or chlorella to your recipes (it’s a real toxin vacuum cleaner)
  • Use herbal medicinal products to help your kidneys and intestines (parsley, fennel, dandelion…)
  • Take food supplements: viola tricolor and burdock are two very effective plants to fight against acne.

Good to know: sun and pollution are an explosive cocktail!

The link between pollution and acne cases is now established. Moreover, in summer, another enemy appears: the sun. It temporarily removes acne, but back from vacation, beware of the boomerang effect when blackheads come back again!

And what about your beauty routine?

Whatever the type of hormonal acne, it is essential to reconsider your skincare products. Skincare that are too rich or, on the contrary, too drying, can unbalance the production of sebum and cause hormonal acne. Similarly, so-called comedogenic treatments (for comedo, dermatological name given to pimples) may generate imperfections.

But good news for oily skin: sebum tends to keep the skin smooth and supple longer, so that fine lines and wrinkles are less visible!

Your beauty routine must therefore be adapted: a gentle cleanser for oily skin, a mild toner, a cream for adult acne, a treating cream without being too aggressive.
