Ultraviolet light is invisible to humans, because it has shorter wave lengths than the light we can see. Within the UV spectrum, there are two types of rays that can damage the DNA in your skin cells and lead to skin cancer. It’s important to protect your skin from both types:

– UVB rays cause sunburn and play a key role in developing skin cancer. A sunscreen’s SPF number refers mainly to the amount of UVB protection it provides.

– UVA rays cause skin damage that leads to tanning as well as skin aging, wrinkles and hyperpigmentation. The shortest wavelengths of UVA rays also contribute to sunburn.

It’s important to look for the words “broad spectrum” on a product’s label, which means it has ingredients that can protect you from UVA as well as UVB rays.

Sunscreen should be applied every day, even if it is overcast outside or even if you’re spending the day inside. UV radiation is not only present on a warm summer day but is also present and can damage skin when the weather is cool or cloudy. This is especially the case for people with a fair skin tone, as they have less of the protective pigment called melanin.

However, people of all skin tones are subject to skin cancer, and should practice proper sun protection, including wearing daily sunscreen.

High Protection chemical Filters blocking the UV rays responsible for photo-aging and sunburn:

Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate: Also known as Octinoxate, this ingredient provides UVB protection.

Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane: Also known as Avobenzone, this ingredient absorbs UVA rays.

Ethylhexyl Triazone: This is a newer generation UV filter that provides broad-spectrum UVB and short UVA protection.

Methylene Bis-Benzotriazolyl Tetramethylbutylphenol [Nano]: Also known as Tinosorb M, this is a broad-spectrum UV filter that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.

Before exposure, apply enough to cover the exposed area (face and neck). Reapply frequently and especially after bathing and toweling or perspiring. Reducing the amount of sunscreen product applied leads to a significant reduction in protection. Even well protected, reduce exposure as much as possible. Avoid contact with eyes and clothing.

The SPF number tells you how long the sun’s UV radiation would take to redden your skin when using the product exactly as directed versus the amount of time without any sunscreen. So ideally, with SPF 50 it would take you 50 times longer to burn than if you weren’t wearing sunscreen.
