Alkaline nutrition for beautiful skin?

Alkaline nutrition for beautiful skin?

Did you know that a beautiful skin and a healthy body depend on a good acid-base balance?

In principle, the body maintains balance naturally. But stress, inadequate care, pollution, lack of sleep, sedentary lifestyle, a diet too rich in animal proteins and sugars contribute to acidifying the skin and the body by modifying the bacterial flora.

The acid-base diet is based on the premise that the excessive acidity of our blood could be the cause of many ailments (fatigue, osteoporosis, high blood pressure…). It therefore aims to limit acidifying foods and to consume alkalinizing foods regularly.

A little chemistry reminder!

pH means “hydrogen potential”, it allows to measure the acidity level of a solution on a scale from 0 to 14.

7: the pH is said to be acidic

< 7: the pH is called alkaline.

Healthy skin has a pH of 5.5. This intelligent ecosystem between sebum, cells and bacteria prevents the uncontrolled development of harmful microorganisms.

The skin is therefore naturally acidic and must remain so, but if it is attacked with detergents or a traditional soap with a very basic pH of 9 to 11, it loses its balance and its defence system. Whether your skin is oily or dry, this means that the pH is unbalanced. Too acidic, oily skin promotes bacterial proliferation (acne). Too alkaline, dry skin can suffer from irritation.

Fatigue, dull complexion: what if your diet was the cause?

Indeed, during digestion, food releases into the body substances that either acidify or alkalinize. The excess acidity creates a chronic inflammatory ground which, over time, generates a lot of more or less benign disorders and makes us age faster. To restore balance, the body then draws from its reserves neutralizing molecules, such as calcium and magnesium from bones and teeth or potassium from muscles, leading to a risk of demineralization or even osteoporosis.

And this has effects on the skin: acidification leads to the degradation of tissues and mucous membranes that are gradually gnawed away. This causes inflammation and porosity, which naturally leads to the proliferation of pathogenic organisms (bacteria, fungi, disturbance of skin flora, acne…).

So choose the alkaline diet!

“The higher the protein content of a food, the more acidic it is”

The acid-base diet is not new: it is old but became known through the method of Dr Catherine Kousmine in the 1980s.  The alkaline diet is based on the principles of acid-base balance. It is not a new fashionable diet but a diet based on an understanding of the human body as a whole. It is based only on known and recognized dietary principles and strategies to facilitate the regeneration of the body.

To make good food choices, you must first know your needs, that is, be attentive to yourself, your body, your feelings and your desires. It is equally important to understand the complex environment in which we live on a daily basis, which is not without consequences. And having in mind the list of basifying and acidifying foods is very useful to balance your meals!

Alkaline foods:

  • vegetables
  • the fruits
  • dried fruit and nuts
  • oleaginous fruits (almonds, hazelnuts, olives, coconuts, etc.)
  • aromatic plants and certain medicinal plants
  • olive, rapeseed and coconut oils

Acidifying foods:

  • dairy products
  • animal products
  • grain products
  • sweet products
  • processed products
  • legumes

Some foods may be exceptions and can be found in both cases such as citrus fruits (lemon, grapefruit, etc.).

And preserve the pH balance of your skin!

The best way to balance the pH of your skin is to use treatments with a neutral pH. This is called physiological pH.

At Gisele Delorme, our active lotion is a neutral pH alkaline lotion (5,6) specially formulated to rebalance the skin’s pH thanks to its mineral-rich algae content. The skin will thus be better able to receive other care to make it stronger, more radiant, happier. This treatment can be customized according to your skin type and specific needs.

Gisele’s tip :

Despite its acid taste, lemon has an alkaline pH and is said to have a thousand benefits: a lighter complexion, better digestion, a detoxifying effect. So, remember to drink warm lemon water on an empty stomach when you wake up, as long as you don’t dilute it in hot water (this “kills” its vitamin C)

By regulating the skin’s flora, you will preserve your beauty!
